How Does a Shower Drain Work?

Unlike bathtubs, shower Floor Drain do not have a lever or stopper that closes up the drain to allow water to fill up. No matter what type of shower drain you have, they all function in the same way. This is to connect the shower plumbing to the nearest plumbing pipe and allow water to empty out into the drainage system.

Most types of bathroom floor drain are designed similarly, while their installations differ. Each drain comprises four main components – the grid, strainer, trap, and vent.
Grid: The grid, as its name would suggest, is the topmost metal grate that is designed to let the water flow straight through as you use the shower. The grid is the component that different types of drains are referring to.
Stainer: The strainer is situated right below the grid and functions to prevent any large objects from entering the drain pipe and causing clogs. Many types of shower drains even allow for the grid to be removed so you can clean out the strainer. This should be done regularly to keep the pipes as clean as possible.
Trap: As the drain snakes down toward the sewage system, the design changes to form a U-shape is known as the trap. It is a one-way valve that prevents any sewer gasses from entering into your bathroom through the drain.
Vent: The vent allows air into the drainage system in order to facilitate the draining process. If the vent becomes clogged, the water will drain slowly, or not at all.
